Over more than 65 years, United Nations High Commission for Refugees is protecting the rights and well being of refugees. Formed in 1949 after International Refugee organization fell out of favor, UNHCR since then has been mandated with protection of refugees and supporting them at the request of government or the UN itself and assists their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country.

After signing the 1951 Convention Relating to Status of Refugees, the mandate of UNHCR was very much restricted to Europe itself. However, eventual help received by commission’s coordination and assistance in Chinese refugee in Hong Kong and 1960s decolonization trigger demanded greater mandate for the organization and need to eradicate regional barriers as well. This resulted in 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees.
